The Shelving Rock
The Shelving Rock is where the Patriot
Militia stored their gunpowder during the rains on the night of September 26,
1780. This year the OVTA was able to camp at the Shelving Rock campsite for the
first time in the history of the re-enactment campaign.

Tim Massey standing in front of the Shelving
Rock. The road you see in the foreground, when built, took away a good part of
the Shelving Rock. Prior to the road being improved, Tim would be about 10 feet
below where he is now. The Shelving Rock was a much more majestic site then.

Plaque placed there in 1910 by the John Sevier Chapter of the DAR. It was reset
in 1965 when the road improvements were made.

the reset date and the verb age: "Kings Mountain Men Sept 26, 1780 They
Trusted in God and Kept Their Powder Dry"

That evening the Roan Mountain Citizen's
Club treated us to a feast. We all thourghly appreciate the support of local
groups such as this. This is one way they invest in the OVTA and our efforts in
"KEEPING THE STORY ALIVE". Ronnie looks like he is well taken care of
and Hallie and Tom Holmes are doing their share.
